MoogLab HatchFest 08

The Bob Moog Foundation has not only been doing great work to catalogue Bob's archives but tremendous outreach too. As an embodiment of the mission to carry on his innovations fitting together as a new organic whole the human and the technical, Sean McDonald and other foundation members worked with HatchFest (an arts festival focused on innovation which is held regionally in different parts of the country), and the software group VidVox on some cool new Theremin Magic.

Bob Moog

It does not seem like three years since Bob Moog left this world.
(May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005)

His genius and spirit continue to speak to us in the instruments he built and in the many writings and recordings he left behind.

His foundation continues to preserve his legacy and his company Moog Music is still going strong making incredible instruments keeping Bob's constant intent that they must become a direct extension of the player.

Bob was the main reason the theremin survived into our time, by making instruments (he started his electronics career building theremins) and writing articles that helped other builders and many hobbyists get started making them.

Bob Moog with one of his theremins

Remembering Bob Moog On His Birthday:
The majority of music consumers and musicians know of the Moog Synthesizer, but very few realize its inventors roots in theremin building and it's influence on his life and career. A native New Yorker, Bob Moog was born May 23rd, 1934 and was schooled in the city

Bob Moog has had a vital role in preserving the theremin. Without his instruments, articles, lectures, and kits, it's likely none, or very few of us would be playing or building them now.

Challenge to our members - spread the word about EtherMusic 2008!

I'm reaching out to our amazing theremin community to ask you all a favor. Please help spread the word about EtherMusic 2008 so we can help ensure its success. Moog Music is working very hard to bring it together and has taken a lot of feedback since the 2005 festival. I look back at my own personal experience at EtherMusic 2005 as incredibly fun, inspiring, energizing, creative, and memorable. Given what I've seen from the plans so far, this year's festival will be even better.

Here are some ideas for spreading the word:

  • E-mail at least 5 of your friends to tell them about it.
  • Join StumbleUpon.com and "like it"
  • Blog about it!
  • Submit it as a news tip to your favorite music blog
  • Rate it on Digg.com!
  • Mention it on any electronic music-related e-mail lists, MySpace groups, FaceBook groups, Yahoo! groups, etc. you're a member of.
